Casual Critiquing

It is no secret that the news has been a bit slow lately. Can you feel summer setting in yet? Everyone is preoccupied yearning for the good old school days where we had summers off that a slow down is coming on. Curse this cold corporate world that we are all so determined to work in. At least it seems the impending-doom-of-the-Earth-from-robots news seems to have died down. For now...

Good news about the Mars missions though, the robotic arm is prepared to begin drilling soon. Will there be water? Ice? What sort of amazing things could be within Mars besides red rocks?

Interview with Mark Rein on Unreal Engine past and future

Take your BBQ out on the water and fear not the fire - The greatest invention man has ever created. Perfect for summer time camping trips at the lake.

A jacket that has self defense down to every last shocking thread - Rather stylish too, I am a fan of that future-ish collar.

Love Gears of War? Now you can accurately LARP it - LARP, an acronym representing Live-Action Role-Playing for those of you who did not know. It is disturbing subject manner, and I will not go into it any further than that. Either way, the armor and weapons could prove to be quite impressive.

I have a plan

There was an article posted on Gamasutra a couple of weeks ago that spoke on the "Quality of Life" issue raised by an EA employee's fiance over three years ago. Evidently the reaction over this rehashing commentary article was overwhelming and a follow-up page has been posted containing a selection of the user comments. Interesting read to see various views on the subject. I find that crunch time exists everywhere, not just in the development game industry. Is it a problem based on project management or overbearing higher-ups? I find the fault lies within multiple aspects of the company, and generally falls on communication issues. An idea was not fully expressed, realized, or accepted; proper direction was not given; a deadline was overlooked, not given sincere thought, or not seriously handled to the extent that it needed to be. Communication is key to running businesses smoothly, I know that all too well from my current job. Regardless, in any area of work if you can not stand to do overtime then you are not doing what you want to and should consider changing careers.

Lucas and his aliens

Everyone loves Facebook, right? Even the Prime Minister of China, Wen Jiabao, has his own page now. I wonder when he will have a MySpace page up next. I am not a big fan of the social networking sites; people claim that playing video games is a waste of time when the online social networkers will spend hours just flipping through random quizzes and looking up the profiles of strangers they have friended to make their fan numbers higher than others. It is all about how individuals want to sink their time, and I just can not see Facebook and MySpace as a productive use of my time.

Next generation of touch screen computers - Using your hands on your computer screen will make it very dirty very quickly. Think of the snacks people at around their computers now! Ever taken all of the keys off your keyboard and seen what is underneath? It can be rather unappetizing.

Sony's view on video game voice acting - The best voice acting I have seen in a game to this date has got to be Uncharted. It just blew me away how cinematic the voice acting made the video game feel. Nice to know that Greg deBeer agrees with me.

More and more Spore - You know you can not get enough. Three more months...

Electromagnetic allergies - Sounds like certain people hate others who enjoy being online in public.

People curious as to why GTA 4 has avoided religious group attacks - Complaining? Maybe they have realized that there really is no reason to further slanderize a video game.

Tariffs in violation of the World Trade Agreement - Technology will advance faster and farther if we work together.

A suit that makes music based on your dancing - Is that not the opposite of what is supposed to happen? Music makes you dance, not the other way around!

Olympic Games tickets contain electronic personal information - Try scalping those babies.

Darkrai Pokemon to be available at Toys R Us for a limited time - Is it possible for a DS download station to be overloaded with users? Or crash even?

Internet war

The enjoyable, extra-long weekend was a nice break of fresh air before returning to the daily grind. Did everyone get enough extra sleep, beat that final boss, or party an additional all-night-long? Well, if not there are only four days in this work week before the next break. That has to be something to look forward to.

I was hoping that the Ninja Gaiden 2 demo would have been released last week seeing as how there are only a few weeks left before the game hits the shelves. Maybe instead it will come out this week; better late than never.

The science of happiness and pleasure with regards to video game creation - A bit unaware where the author came up with the idea that people expect more reward for waiting, as the general populous is obsessed with instant gratification.

Memorial Day Weekend

Just rented my first "movie to game" video game ever: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for GameCube. I suppose that one it is more like "book to movie to game," regardless I have not ever been too interested in playing them before. It makes me wonder if they are popular in general, developers keep making them, so there must be some sort of market for them. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out, maybe I will come one step closer to understanding the movie game. I have played games like the Lego-ified movies, but I do not think that they fall into this category for me; while they do play out similarly to the movies, I think the Lego aspect outshines the cinematic plot. Either way, long weekend time for everyone to enjoy some quality gaming.

Bubble hearth

On NPR today there was a discussion on how there were more votes for the American Idol winner last night than there were in 9 of the 12 last presidential elections. Shocking? More like disappointing. The number of actual votes for American Idol is a bit inflated though and does not actually represent the number of voters. Still not a pleasant thought. Do people care more about a reality television show than the election for the leader of our country? I honestly believe that some of the people who participated in the American Idol finale last night do.

Learn to Play

Age of Conan, the new MMO to take on World of Warcraft, and WiiFit, the end of the home gym equipment, were both released this week. I have reason to believe that the WiiFit is nearly as scarce as the Wii itself is, so that one sounds like a hit, but as for Age of Conan I am not really sure. I doubt that anything short of Blizzard's own next MMO will be able to knock a chunk of WoW's current player base out of its spot; and if it does, is that going to be a good thing for Blizzard? They could in essence be splitting their audience in half, which might allow for another game to be able to sneak into the playing field. Blizzard could effectively undo its self. Time will tell I suppose.

Video games are just like real life

Video games are being blamed for everything these days; even for Japanese arcades going out of business. It is quite like evolution though, is it not? There is little reason to go out to play video games when you have them in your home. That is probably why you do not see many arcades around in the states, did the Japanese ever think of that? Speaking of crazy people, there was a case study done regarding a World of Warcraft debuff in comparison to real world diseases. Of course human behavior of the players was similar to that in the real world, they are still people, more of them just feel it is okay to act immaturely.

game time in the spring time

There was a man on trial for murdering a young female not too long ago, and he chalked it up to a trance that playing video games put him into. Now there are children stealing vehicles and ramming them into cop cars, remarking that it is more fun than it is in video games. To think that there are people like them an others who would say that the excuses behind these actions are video game based disgusts me. Not every human being is smart or has common sense, and that is not a result of gaming, rather of poor development and lack of parental guidance. Video games are the victims on the sidelines here, and it brings up a useful saying: "Guns don't kill people; people kill people."

Honor amongst geeks

Apparently, Microsoft and Yahoo are at it again. It is like a bad afternoon soap opera gone geek. How many more J.D. and Elliot references can be made before Microsoft just gets over the heartbreak and moves on? Seriously, it is about time. Electronic devices to conquer earth

There have been many movies generated from the idea that a man-made object, such as a robot, will develop sentience and rebel against humans. Yet, there are people who continue to manufacture and improve artificial intelligence and mechanical electronics. What if the robots do end up taking control of our planet one day? How many people are going to have to listen to their friends say "I told you so" whilst being enslaved by inanimate sentients? Just a thought.

A-Vibe

One of my favorite sites, Game Politics, has completely revamped their layout. It looks great, and makes it a much more enjoyable read.

Do you judge a game by its case? Or maybe its name? I have, and I am willing to claim that you probably have as well. Now, I am not one to say that the idea is entirely bad, but I have found that it can lead me into a direction towards some games that I might not have otherwise chosen to play. For instance:

Shin Megami Tensei Persona 3: The "Shin Megami Tensei" alone made me want to play this game. It sounds too Japanese-awesome-like to not play.

Billy Hatcher: The box art features a kid in a rooster suit, little did I know then the extent of the fun the platformer had to offer.

Skies of Arcadia: The title conveys a role-playing game, and along with the box art of sky pirates, seriously where can one go wrong?

These are some of my favorite games of all time. And to think, I never would have known if I had not taken that second glance at the cover. What title or game case has caught your eye?

Free playable demo of the upcoming Lego Indiana Jones game - Have yet to have the chance to try it out myself, but I have the feeling it will be great.

Discussion on dynamic difficulty adjustment (DDA) - I have mixed feelings on the subject. It all depends on the extent of the implementation and the type of game. Definitely in full support of selectable difficulty level during gameplay though, or an option to turn DDA on or off.

Microsoft's overinflated ego shoves the Wii out of the console gaming running - In response to Sony's declaration of worldwide sales. What ever Microsoft needs to say to help them sleep at night I suppose.

Take Testing Seriously

While I am not the biggest first-person shooter fan, I can still discern games that are poorly developed against those that are not. Just from watching a play through of Resistance on the Playstation 3 makes me wonder if some of the elements, such as large lengths of game play without checkpoints and general lack of direction, are more resulted from initial development slack or lackluster quality control testers. Are certain aspects of the game left untested, do the testers not notice the issues, or maybe the developers choose to ignore certain points brought to their attention by the testers. "Working as intended," as Blizzard might say.

It appears to me that these issues reach well beyond just this one title, and instead has become an infection plaguing many of the games that are being released. Quality control is an essential step to any formulation of a product before it reaches the client; and not everyone is good at it. Any random gamer looking to break into the industry is not necessarily going to make the best candidate for a testing job. Sometimes it seems those who are under qualified are the ones who hold the tester positions and perform to the standards of mediocrity, allowing poorly implemented ideas to make it through to the consumer. Do you blame the gamers who think that because they play games they can accurately test game quality, or the developers who hired them because they were cheaper than the people who definitely know what they are doing?

Hate the nunchuck cable? Check out the wireless version - Resyncing is only required for the people who hold the control stick in a direction while syncing, that happens with any wireless controller.

The Narnia: Prince Caspian game is out this week on nearly every platform for those of you who enjoy book to movie to video game titles. Blizzcon 2008 has been announced and tickets should be going on sale soon enough. I am a hopeful attendee as I am finally in the near vicinity! I will be seeing you there I presume.

Presidential candidates make kids do stupid things, not video games - And his parents were proud when they found out, even though they originally thought it was for vacation money? What sort of an 11-year-old needs to keep a savings for vacations? Last time I checked he is still young enough that his parents should be the ones handling the holidays. Amazing things happen when brainwashing occurs at such a young age.

Thank Mog...

Spam, MySpace, and Facebook are all coming to mobile phones now. What ever happened to a phone just being a phone? How many people use their mobile to do something other than call people more often than they actually do call people? With numbers like these I am sure there are quite a few. Anyway, I think we could all use a giant NES controller that doubles as a storage unit.

Young children and their casual gaming to take over the Internet!

"Skateboarding" for the business professional - If it costs as much as an entire bike, why not go for that instead?

New copy protection for EA's computer games sucks - There is a way around everything, especially security, and the more you contain consumers the more willing they will be to jump ship and go in the less frustrating, and cheaper, way.

Bioshock headed to the big screen with Pirates' director - I am slightly worried considering how poor Pirates of the Caribbean 3 came out, but he has done other great works, Mousehunt and The Ring, so all-in-all I am fairly excited!

shake your bill

One of my favorite animals while I was growing up was the platypus, and as luck would have it, there was an article posted today about that very mammal's genetic coding. All of the unique features it exhibits were displayed clearly in it's DNA: avian, reptilian, and mammalian; what is more unique than that? Last of its kind as well, the only mammal still around who lays eggs. An absolutely amazing creature, and I am determined to pet one, one day. Keep an eye out for a new Dr. Mario, as it will be available for download next week off of the WiiWare store.

When the military runs out of ideas, turn to the citizens - I am awaiting the battle footage on YouTube.

Googlers do not want to Google any longer - What could the reasons behind these executives leaving be? Jobs are not nearly cush enough? Could make more money being the second-in-command at a lesser company?

Mother endorses Chinese piracy and then blames Nintendo for ruining her children - Sounds like a parent who does not even being to consider regulating what her children partake in until video games come into the picture. You have to watch out for those pink ponies, they will do a number on your kids.

Microsoft claims UK victory for rise in XBox 360 sales - As if there is any other game actually worth purchasing a sub par system for. I think Bill Gates might owe Take-Two employees a few... favors.

Doom 4 announced - The developer, id Software, is hiring as well.

Turn your house into a DS download station

"We can pick the game, but we can not change the rules."

Two rather exciting interview articles concerning two of the most amazing UK men were posted during the month of April, and I had missed them both until now. The first is about Bear Grylls, the man that goes up against the wild on the Discovery channel every Friday; the other, who can be described rather similarly in a Sci-Fi sense, David Tennant, the 10th Doctor Who. The interviews sound relatively similar, neither one walks about town as if they are the big cheese, and take everything in stride. Together and separate they are remarkable and inspiring. I was also planning on posting a "Top 25 PC Games of All Time" list, but it was no where near up to snuff.

Non-subscription based HD satellite service available in the UK - Archangel Network anyone?

Free Wi-Fi soon to be a thing of the past? - Sounds to me like the cheaper hotels will be the ones to stay at. So long as the Wi-Fi is free I can overlook the decaying hookers under the mattress.

Hello Kitty will solve individual's energy issues - Now all we need is a DS with a similar design to match.

Future business leadership lies among the gamer guild leaders - A long, well-worthy read. Feels a bit inflated at times; for instance, a group leader generally does not have to worry about keeping his party in tension-less harmony. Most parties are formed for one reason: the other members are necessary for you to be able to accomplish your goal, whether that be to attain items, materials, or money. For that reason alone, most groups will stick together throughout whatever it is that they set out to do even if they can not stand one another, and will merely part after their mission is complete with a few derogatory comments. However, I find that their argument is quite valid, especially among guilds and guild-run activities. These events are usually more dependent upon having a cohesive player base, making stress between members necessary to relieve. The outside view looking in, interesting to see it from the other side.

San Francisco in the age of The Jetsons - Appears that way anyway.

Is your GTA4 freezing? - Mine sure did.. Will not load with the internet settings turned on anymore, oh well.

Play it before you disgrace it - How long can you last with a 6-star police rating in GTA4?

GTA takes all the blame

Microsoft has finally given up on Yahoo, for the time being anyway. Tired of hearing about that, thanks to Google's working with Yahoo we will not have to. Nothing too big on the release list this week. If you have yet to check out Neverwinter Nights 2, the Gold edition is out tomorrow. Today is relatively slow; blame it on the release of Grand Theft Auto 4 last week.

Ever-Evolving industry

Dan Houser of Rockstar Games lashed out against casual gaming. While he might not think to cater to that market, it does not mean it is not a notable audience. The number of casual gamers has grown exponentially, but one must also take into account the fact that the amount of gamers in general has grown drastically with the general acceptance and working knowledge of computers and the Internet. Of course there are people who are looking for those ground breaking games, but they are growing progressively rarer in this industry of dying quality.

The era of lost remotes needs to come to an end - Who controls your living room? Is it your wife? Your dog?

The next robotic pets: squirrels - I just hope that none of these little guys get run over by a car; let us hope their controllers are a bit brighter than that.

Activision Blizzard (or soon to be) decides not to renew ESA membership - What ever could this possibly mean? Did Activision spend a pretty penny on Vivendi and now comes up high and dry on their membership dues? I doubt that is the case with the amount of profit that Blizzard must rake in every month.

Where is that Lego Batman signal?

Valve: bad asses to babies?

Microsoft continues to pursue Yahoo - Will they? Maybe not? Oh, so close.

Magic dust "re-grows" a man's finger - I think not. Over exaggeration does not lead to scientific breakthroughs.

Create your own casual games - Much to Houser's dismay, now you will never have to log on to PopCap ever again.

Blue-Ray XBox a possibility - I do not think there is much that Microsoft can do to eliminate the obvious advantage that Sony has over them with the PS3.

May 2nd, 2008

Are you fearless?

The servers for Grand Theft Auto 4 on the Playstation were down most of the release day. Surprised? Also rather unsurprising is the number of copies sold on day one. Not to mention the XBox 360 sales entirely outweighed the PS3. Today is supposedly one of the most prominent due dates for college applications and scholarships, anyone miss their deadline due to GTA's alluring presence?

Purchasing video games makes people violent - It is amusing how people are already attempting to use this as evidence of video games making people violent, but if you think about, it any material item that is greatly sought after could cause people to do something like this.

Deliciously fun Lego Indiana Jones trailer - Whip it good.

Even the Pentagon can not keep their files secured - Wonder if there are any hackers out there kicking themselves for not noticing the lack of security earlier.

Robot rebuilds itself - Watch the video, it is creepy and awesome at the same time. Just wait for this to be a feature with the robotic animals.

Special editions of video games are generally worthless - Assassin's Creed makes this article more true than any other.

Purchasable downloadable movies - For those whose monitors are larger than their televisions.
