virtual kittens
Close up another month with some game releases set for this week: Guitar Hero: Aerosmith is all over the Internet. And after jamming out you can spend time with your kitten friends in Purr Pals on the Wii. How can you resist the blatant misspelling of "breeds" on the cover art? That has to make it more adorable, right?

Manveer Heir has the bright idea of turning the Virginia Tech incident into the next Sims video game. Now there will really be no excuse for when an incident like the VTech one happens again, as we all know video games cause people to do bad things. The creator must be merely trying to draw attention to himself, no one is dim-witted enough to actually go through with a video game based on this. Right? Reviewing the designer's blog entry, there actually does not sounds like much going on in the game, at all; wander around campus and interact with different people and environments. Sounds like the only reason the VTech incident is brought into this lackluster game is to generate some interest and PR for it; good and bad. It obviously got some people talking.

Bad influences
Watch out for the new casual game that has hit Newgrounds; The Torture Game 2 allows the player to do essentially whatever they want to harm a human-like character. With all of the cases recently with police placing the blame on Grand Theft Auto 4, what can we expect to see in the courtroom next? A flash game on a website made them do it? What about the "real world" news talking about how the United States has participated in torture against actual human beings; you do not believe that has any influence on kids?

Frighteningly social
An ABC webcast yesterday had Clive Thompson speaking on horror video games and their relation with horror movies. He feels that the interaction aspect of the game enhances horror stories beyond the narrative range of any cinematic medium. With the horror movie market currently being overflowed with more gory alternatives, it is no surprise that survival horror video games would start to surpass the movies. Being scared by a movie does not happen as often anymore; we have seen something jump out of every side of the screen one too many times to not expect it. Always seemed to be more exciting to sit down with some friends and play a survival horror game together than sit through a cliche film, even when the games make even the manliest of gamers scream like little girls.

More console demographic conclusions being pointlessly drawn - All of the listed responses for an XBox 360 user are generally reflective of a younger person, and we have already seen other studies that "figured out" the XBox 360 is played by a younger crowd. So, how is any of this surprising?

Product placement
Blizzard had planned the World of Warcraft game to be a subscriptionless MMO when it was first being developed. Instead of the monthly subscriptions they would have So much would have been different if there was advertising present in World of Warcraft; just think of the product placement: water would be Coke and Pepsi, food would be McDonald's, equipment would range from Gucci engineering spectacles to Armani plate, and Prada bags would be the new 24-slotters. They could have implemented a system where if you own the item in real life you could send it in and have it added to your character's inventory instead, just as they did in Magic the Gathering: Online.

My gaming coach
This is definitely a gamer's week, tons of games are scheduled to come out over the next few days: besides Wall-E on nearly every platform and Alone in the Dark on the Wii, there is not much to look forward to. A new Nintendo DS "coach" game has come out, this one with intent to help the player lose weight. In My Weight Loss Coach the game works with you to attain a healthy balance in your life, and allows you to track your progress as you follow its instruction. Maybe this one will be able to hold the player's interest longer than My French Coach did. People hardly can keep a scheduled routine with others pushing them to keep going; how is a video game going to accomplish that?

Discrepancies
I have been greatly disappointed in the Sonic games over the past few years. Watching today's new trailer for Sonic Unleashed makes me wish for the old days of the more thrilling 2D Sonic titles. What ever happened to those anyway, why the leap into three dimensions when it was rather unnecessary? These days the Sonic games only require you to push in one direction and hit the jump button on occasion; in each successive game he just runs faster, and faster making the game less interactive and exciting each time. I suppose that there is someone out there still buying the games, otherwise they would not continue to disgrace the name of Sonic would they?
MUD guru speaks out about World of Warcraft - He claims that "no MMO is going to be fun" so why do we care what he thinks about World of Warcraft and what he thinks he could do to make it better? I did like his idea about a reverse auction house that he mentioned, where players could put up a request for an item and someone could take them up on their offer.

Purple means epic
An article was posted yesterday regarding the rising game costs, and how that translates into lengthy and involved video games not being financially worth it. First of all, to make money one must spend money. Sure, everyone who plays your game will not see every little piece of it, probably not even finish it, but for those who do it will be well worth it. In World of Warcarft, for instance, most people never see the end content, especially of raid dungeons, but millions of people still play it because it is that good. Blizzard appropriately managed and spent their time, knowledge, and finances to produce quality video gaming. I think, too, that while some may not experience everything a game has to offer, the existence of the content alone proves that time and effort were instilled throughout the development process. Thus the game as a whole is going to be better than one that was not tended to properly. Regardless, how well did Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear, Final Fantasy, and other lengthy, legendary titles sell? That is what I thought.

Downhill Battle
With everyone worrying that the console gaming market is going to fail, and then the computer gaming market is on its way out, but then there is a huge influx of subscription gaming that is left out... it is about time that someone came out and said it. The only direction the video game industry is going, is up. Yes, there seems to be only the occasional big-hit PC titles, but there should be no cause for alarm. Only more people are going to want to play video games, and that is not going to change any time soon. Wonder what those titles in 2012 will be, anything new and exciting or just the same old sequels continually rehashed? Also, sounds like the place to be a developer right now is Georgia or Wisconsin. Does that not sound as if they are trying to draw the companies out to their states?

New Releases
The official Spore Creature Creator demo is available today, and I took it out for a spin. First up, we have my Adipose, a Doctor Who reference for those of you who have forgotten. A dinosaur was requested of me, so we have Happy. And then for some reason I found an affinity for the insect mouth appendages and came up with Nepads and Skunkipede. I could not figure out how to change the color of the appendages; perhaps that option is not available in this version. The tools are easy to use, and while there are only a few selections available to us there is still tons of creativity to be had. If your copy is not working, try uninstalling the EA Download Manager; seemed to give my game a couple of problems loading. Also, Firefox 3 is available today, make sure to go upgrade.

Video Game Revisiting
Spore Creature Creator comes out this week to get everyone all hot and worked-up for the full game release in September. There are rumors of a preemptive demo release, but it will be out officially tomorrow from the real website so there is not much reason to risk infecting your computer at this late in the game. Oh, and Deadliest Catch: Alaskan Storm is out on XBox 360 this week; better race to the store, I am sure that one will go... quickly...

Work impedes gaming
For those of us who are unfortunate enough to not be a part of the gaming industry but who love to game, sometimes work can cut into our play time more than we would like. For people who are still looking for an educational option to break into the development of games, Digipen announced that they are now offering two new degrees for video games. School not really up your alley? Take a look over at Retro Studios then, seems there are in need of a few fresh faces. Metroid Prime series? You know those are some good people. Google has now officially stolen Yahoo from Microsoft leaving Microsoft heartbroken and looking for an alternate pathway to the top. As soon as we thought it was over, too. Zerg Creator
There have been some Spore creations released that appear to have been created mostly by the Maxis crew; some of my favorites: Sleagle a parrot-looking slug, Black Orchid the angry spiny flower-like creature, and Limeon that resembles a sunflower cactus plant. Many of them are just plain strange looking. I know I have a few childhood imaginary friends that I will be trying to make with this creature creator program. Not to mention a few more well-known video game characters, if today's title does not give away some of my intent...

Metal Gear Solid 4 is out this week, have you finished toying with Grand Theft Auto 4 yet? The Ninja Gaiden 2 demo is also available, but only to XBox Live Gold users. The game is already out, why would Team Ninja or Microsoft want to limit who can access the demo? I would think that they would want everyone to download it, love it, and then go out and buy it. Instead they are risking losing potential customers by not granting access to the demo. Especially with regards to the general agreement about the difficulty of the first Ninja Gaiden, people are interested in testing out the second I am sure. What is the point of the barrier anyway? Microsoft's hand in anything will burden the outcome.

Lego Comeback
Good news on the Phoenix Lander, it has retrieved its first sample and should be ready to start running some tests soon. Will there be evidence of life? What would be interesting to find would be replicable DNA of some sort. Are there not crazy shows on resurrecting dinosaurs through cloning? Why not try with Martian life instead? I wonder what might have lived on Mars at one point in time; while I do believe that sentient life other than ourselves exists or has existed, I do not think they were on Mars. Surely too there exists beings of such complexity that we can not even begin to fathom any characteristic about them. And do not forget, the Iraq war cost us the colonization of Mars. How disappointing is that?

With all of the hype these days about energy drinks, I too thought it was about time for an anti-energy drink. This little drink was influenced by the South's cough syrup drug, Purple Drank, and does make you rather sleepy; I am sure even more so if mixed with alcohol. While I am not one to drink energy drinks, I wonder if this would have enough strength to counteract a Redbull or Rockstar of the same size. Maybe I should test a few of them out at work, might calm some coworkers down. What ever happened to just water anyway?

I have started considering purchasing a navigation system for the car, living in the Los Angeles area makes me feel like it is almost necessary. What I did not have in mind during my search however was something fuzzy. Yes, that is a robotic teddy bear car navigator, and yes it is very creepy. I can only imagine the sound of its voice, Carebear perhaps? This item is straight from Japan, if you could not guess that on your own. Be prepared for the upcoming line of other robotic car navigators: Hello Kitty, school girls in sailor uniforms, and Pokemon.

Whatever you do...
A great article was posted today on Gamasutra concerning video game narratives. Justin Marks, the author, certainly had it right when he brought up Grand Theft Auto 4: the cliché-ridden story is more of an annoyance in the general overview of the game than it is a necessary part. While I have not been a huge fan of the fact that to progress further into the gameplay-ability of the Grand Theft Auto world one must combat the story missions, it is not an accessory that I would like to see completely removed. As I have felt before, with games such as Xenosaga and Metal Gear Solid, I want to play the game, not watch it. While it may have cinematic elements they should shine through the gameplay, not the cut scenes. Not every game needs to turn into "here is your sword, there are bad guys coming go kill them," but story should be a part of the gaming experience.

No Case of the Mondays
This week is already looking better than last, especially with the release list for tomorrow. We have Kung Fu Panda and Lego Indiana Jones on nearly every platform, Ninja Gaiden 2 for XBox 360, and Summon Knight: Twin Age for Nintendo DS. Quite a good bunch of new titles to choose from. Should keep most gamers occupied for awhile, although I am a bit disappointed that I never did see the Ninja Gaiden 2 demo. Perhaps I missed it. Regardless, the real thing should be so much better, right? Not sure about the Kung Fu Panda game honestly, I am more so looking forward to the movie's release this Friday.
